Physiotherapy is a vital component of healthcare that can significantly enhance your quality of life. At Ground Up Physio, we provide holistic physiotherapy in Montreal where our treatment is tailored to meet your individual needs. Whether you're recovering from an injury, managing chronic pain, or striving to improve your athletic performance, our skilled physiotherapists are here to support you.
Assessment Process
Our approach begins with a comprehensive assessment, allowing us to pinpoint the root causes of your issues. We take the time to listen to your story, gathering clues about how your pain developed. By analyzing your movement and walking patterns, we can identify where your body is avoiding motion and which joints and muscles are under stress.
We’ll sit down with you to explain what’s happening in your body, helping you understand the reasons for your pain and why previous treatments may not have worked. Together, we’ll develop a comprehensive, progressive treatment plan aligned with your goals and the activities you wish to return to, considering your current movement experience and your capacity for commitment to a new routine.
Change can be challenging, but we believe that starting with small, manageable steps leads to lasting transformation.
Treatment Process
We prioritize an interconnected approach that focuses on teaching you to utilize your entire body to work together in unison in order to address the root cause of your pain: your poor movement patterns.
What distinguishes us from other clinics/approaches
While well intentioned, typical approaches often focus on manual therapy to relieve pain symptoms. While it sounds nice in theory to massage and manipulate away the pain, the reality is that the moment your body gets up from the treatment table, you return to the same movement patterns that got your body into trouble in the first place. So while you might feel better for a few days post-treatment usually the pain slowly creeps back in. The goal is not to find the next "new" manual approach or fancy gadget to shock away the pain, but to move differently to create deep lasting change.
Most other approaches will hopefully incorporate some form of exercise into the treatment plan. However, the main problem we see with these traditional models is the isolated nature of the exercises that are prescribed.
As we all do appreciate, the body is complex and is highly interconnected. People that seek out physio treatment are often given exercises that focus on a single joint while lying on the floor to create an "activation" of that muscle with the hope that by making the muscle stronger in isolation, the body will figure out what it needs to do when they stand back up. The unfortunate truth is that it usually does not because our bodies need to be challenged upright against gravity in relationship to the way we walk.
Everything ties back to the way we walk
At Ground Up Physio, we deeply understand how the body is supposed to move using the lens of the gait cycle, i.e. how are we supposed to walk with balance, integrity, poise, control, fluidity and coordination. At the heart of most people's issues, especially lower limb pain (lower back and below), the result of not walking in balance leads to certain joints
constantly being overstressed while others do not participate the way they are supposed to.
We must explore how the foot, knee and hip speak with each other and get them to work together. This might sound complicated. It is not. We simply place you in positions that look like walking and get your body accessing motions in once knew and has forgotten over time due to previous injuries, poor movement habits and compensatory patterns. The good news is we simplify things down for you and work with you where you currently are at. These movements will certainly challenge you, but create long last changing at both a nervous system and musculoskeletal level.
Changes can happen quite quickly through this approach where you will immediately feel your body will regain access to joints and tissues its forgotten to use overtime and the interconnected nature will come back online. This will lead to you feeling lighter, stronger and more mobile because all your joints are showing up to the party so to say.
Reinforcement and Support
The key is to then practice these movements at home to reinforce the changes you made during your session at the clinic. You will be guided by a personalized debrief that is sent to your email the day of your session with YouTube videos and tailored notes (not generic stickman figures or static images). We want to optimize your success and make ourselves available via text or email with questions you might have between your sessions, so you do not have to wait until your next session to get answers.
Each session, we re-assess your patterns to gauge your progress, re-evaluate priorities, review the exercises, and adjust the routine accordingly to continue your journey towards your goals.
(Re)Education
Education is also at the heart of our movement approach and key part of the recovery journey. There are many myths and misconceptions about the way we are supposed to carry our bodies. While commonly accepted, many of these myths lead to us holding more tension in our body unnecessarily and fighting against our natural movements. Much of the physiotherapy process is about letting go of old movement patterns and beliefs as it is about learning new ways of moving.
Physiotherapy is not just about recovery; it's about prevention. We provide valuable advice on injury prevention and maintaining and optimizing physical health, so you can lead an active, fulfilling life. Tried everything? Think again...
We have helped countless individuals who've claimed to have tried everything finally find the relief they were looking for even if they were suffering with chronic pain for many years. Not only have people been able to get back to the activities they enjoy, they actually leave the process of working together even better than where they started before their pain or injury as a result of this new knowledge and experience they've embodied.
Located in the heart of Montreal, we pride ourselves on creating a welcoming environment where clients feel comfortable to be vulnerable and share their story without judgment. Our state-of-the-art facility is clean, open and equipped with the latest technology, ensuring effective treatment plans.
